  • CASTILLO DE SANTA CATALINA JAÉN que ejerció un papel clave durante las contiendas entre musulmanes y cristianos, pero, also, el Castillo de Santa Catalina tuvo también especial protagonismo durante la Guerra de la Independencia, al convertirse en un importante centro de operaciones para las tropas napoleónicas. Desde su privilegiado emplazamiento se pueden contemplar unas vistas únicas de gran parte de la provincia, de la ciudad de Jaén y, especially, de su catedral.En cualquier caso, la imagen que, actualmente, podemos ver del Castillo de Santa Catalina corresponde más a la que contaba en el medievo que a los cambios hechos por el ejército francés.Jaén_-_CastilloActualmente, el castillo cuenta con un centro de interpretación en el que se recrea buena parte de su evolución y de la historia de Jaén, ciudad donde se puede completar una magnífica jornada con la visita a su catedral, joya del renacimiento andaluz, a los baños árabes de mayor dimensión de Europa o al conjunto escultórico más importante de la cultura ibérica que se exhibe en el Museo Arqueológico Provincial.

    Desde sus orígenes, Alcalá la Real fue un enclave apreciado al ser lugar de paso obligado de las vías que, desde la costa, se dirigían hacia el interior de la Península. No es de extrañar, pues, que la defensa de la ciudad fuera una de las principales preocupaciones de las distintas autoridades, tanto musulmanas como cristianas. Ello marcó no sólo su urbanismo y arquitectura, sino también la vida de sus gentes, dedicadas en buena parte a la actividad militar, sus manifestaciones religiosas o su tiempo de ocio.

    Alcalá reproduce el esquema general de la ciudad islámica, en tres conjuntos fortificados: la madina, el alcázar y el arrabal. Es por este último por donde podemos comenzar nuestra ruta hasta la cumbre del cerro donde, junto al alcázar, se sitúa el otro edificio que sobresale entre el conjunto monumental amurallado: la Iglesia Mayor Abacial.

    Junto al soberbio conjunto monumental de la Fortaleza de la Mota, Alcalá la Real conserva un centro histórico muy interesante. Se trata de una ciudad media de Andalucía equidistante entre las ciudades vecinas de Córdoba, Granada y Jaén, donde conviven en perfecta armonía la tranquilidad y el sosiego del mundo rural, en un entorno natural privilegiado como es la Sierra Sur, con los modernos y cualificados servicios de una ciudad del siglo XXI.
